FPL: Squad Building for Gameweek 17 - Midfielders and Forwards
Another day and time again to build up my squad a little bit more. I've chosen my Premiums, Goalkeepers and selected the core of my squad which has provided me with the following players so far...
I still feel there's a lot up in the air and as I start to write this post (whilst Man City are playing Liverpool in the Carabao cup), a familiar sight has appeared...
...it doesn't make my decision to choose Salah over De Bruyne any easier!
It's time to focus back on my player ratings though and let my subconscious think about Salah v. De Bruyne with my next set of players. I've now removed all Man City players from my analysis so that I can do the De Bruyne switch either now or before Gameweek 20.
Player Ratings
I've got a cluster of players now who are all rated similarly and I'll repeat my approach from my previous post although I'll err on the side of brevity for those that I'm not including.
👎 Not Including
Ivan Perišić - I'd love to include Perišić but his late return from the World Cup along with Conte's tendency to rotate him puts me off. He'll continue to tempt me though...
Chelsea Defenders - With their Double Gameweek, it's tempting to double up on the Chelsea defence but I'm still considering Kepa and I certainly don't want a Chelsea defensive triple-up. Thiago Silva or Cucurella are the most attractive of the options but I'm not really sure that I want to go there.
Fred - It's a mystery to me how Fred ended up on this list. He's only played 391 minutes and presumably had some easy chances in this time which has inflated his stats - which last season were pretty awful. I'm definitely not tempted.
Taiwo Awoniyi - I think he's still settling into the Premier League and does have a few goals to his name already. His record at Union Berlin was decent but I don't feel that he's nailed down a starting spot yet so is an avoid for now.
Kelechi Iheanacho - Another player who consistently outperforms his xG but he's behind both Jamie Vardy and Patson Daka in the pecking order so not really an option.
I'll get back to Martin Ødegaard and Leandro Trossard later.
👍 Including - Marcus Rashford & Anthony Martial

2 players who are priced the same, Man Utd's return to action has the perfect start. Nottingham Forest are up there with the weakest defences in the league and to make matters worse (for Forest), Dean Henderson's unavailable to play against his parent club so Wayne Hennesey will be playing in goal. Hennesey was preferred to Danny Ward at the World Cup so isn't a terrible Goalkeeper by any means but he's certainly no Dean Henderson.
When Rashford, Fernandes, Sancho and Martial have all played together, they've had the movement and fluidity in attack that could run rampant. With Cristiano Ronaldo's exit and Martial's return to fitness, there's no competition for the Frenchman other than his teammate Marcus Rashford.
In all likelihood, Martial will have his minutes managed (at least initially) which will likely see Rashford play at least some part of every game as the centre forward. Rashford's looking much improved this season and even if he's cutting-in from the left, he's a great prospect.
Stats wise, Rashford has 0.59 xGI per 90 minutes with that predominantly being goal threat (0.43 xG and 0.16 xA) - great for a Midfielder. Martial's limited minutes sees him at an impressive 1.27 xGI (0.72 xG and 0.55 xA) and it's possible that he'll have a say in penalties too having taken one against Man City whilst Bruno Fernandes was on the pitch.
Their price of £6.7m represents great value and gives me a nice price point in both Midfield and Forward line.
Aside
This has just happened so maybe I'll be sticking with Salah after all 😀
Price Points
I've not really spoken about price points in my decisions so far but by choosing a Premium in Midfield in Attack, along with a mid-high-priced asset and now another mid-priced asset, I've got plenty of flexibility to move to other players in future Gameweeks. I mentioned Rodrigo in my last post as somebody I'm interested in and Rashford is a possible transfer out to do this.
Formation
The selection of Martial also completes my Forward line and I have 3 Midfielders so I'll be playing either 3-4-3 or 4-3-3. This now means that I'll have at least 1 Midfielder on my bench every game week so this is an area that I can save some money and select a cheap option here. This is also the reason that I've neither included nor excluded Martin Ødegaard and Leandro Trossard yet - the final Midfield spot might be a position that I use to rotate with my budget Midfielder.
I hope this is making sense!
Budget Midfield Options
I'm not going to go into much detail here because I already have Andreas Pereira in my squad whom I paid £4.5m for. He's somebody that I can play in Fulham's Double Gameweek 19 and is the most guaranteed starter from this list. Leon Bailey is somebody that I've considered (and I've previously discussed Crysencio Summerville) and I've decided to stick with the man that I already own.
Midfielder Rotation with Andreas Perreira
I don't want to be playing Andreas Pereira very often and the best rotation options are listed above. I want a guaranteed starter and somebody who's reasonably cheap so it really comes down to a decision between Martin Ødegaard and Miguel Almirón.
Miguel Almirón has been something of a sensation this season and is the game's top scoring Midfielder.
Martin Ødegaard has gone somewhat under the radar with both Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka proving more popular but Ødegaard is Arsenal's joint top points scorer (with Martinelli) and boasts slightly better underlying stats.
Ødegaard or Almirón would play instead of Pereira every week apart from DGW19 (when Newcastle travel to Arsenal) which is exactly what I'm looking for.
For me, this is a tight decision. Almirón's £0.6m cheaper but I also know that Arsenal have a Double Gameweek 23 and I don't have any concerns over budget yet so for now, I'll go with Ødegaard knowing that Almirón's a viable alternative.

My Squad So Far
I'm nearly there now with just my defence left to complete. I like how things are shaping up and the flexibility that my selections provide.
Things that I'm considering are:
- Salah → De Bruyne (keep Man City slot open)
- Raya + Leno → Ward + De Gea / Kepa / Iversen
- Rodrigo from GW19
- Julián Álvarez's return to Man City
- Martin Ødegaard → Miguel Almirón

I have £19.8m left for my remaining 4 Defenders.

You are very thorough and take this seriously. Great to see though and happy you are here posting your decent quality posts.
I take this far too seriously... although I've learned to enjoy playing and don't get too hung up when things don't go well. My rank's not great at the moment but hopefully it'll get better.
Thank you - I enjoy finding / making the time to write these posts so I'm pleased that they're appreciated 👍
Bonus for Martial is that he’s been selected by fewer than 3% of teams at the time of writing which seems crazy. There is of course the possibility that United will sign another forward in January but until then he looks very good value for money
It does seem crazy and the front 3 I've seen a lot on Twitter is Mitrovic instead of Martial. Given that Mitrovic is a doubt for GW17, I wouldn't be surprised to see Martial's ownership increase towards the deadline. I guess it's possible that most people have opted for Rashford instead and don't want to double up.
They definitely need some depth as Martial's so injury prone. If he can give me 3 Gameweeks then I'll be happy 🙂
I'm excited about sharing the rest of my defence tomorrow - it's slightly different to most of the teams I've seen (i.e. No Cancelo).
I've ditched Cancelo. I think there are other options at better prices. He didn't have a great World Cup and he struggled a bit through November too. Reece James being back also makes it an easier call.
!BEER
He's had a fairly poor season so far and his attacking threat has been minimal. (0.03 xG and 0.06 xA per 90 minutes - way down on last season's 0.13 and 0.17.)
To put this into perspective, his xG and xA data this season is identical to 2 other players - Eric Dier and Marc Cucurella! It's less than Sven Botman, James Tarkowski and Mason Holgate (amongst others).
So I think Cancelo's being massively overhyped and at £7.4m, I really don't see the attraction.

I’d go for Almiron over Odegard cos he was scoring a lot before the World Cup. Arsenal’s Saka and Martinelli seem to have taken the spotlight off of Odegard.
My team’s looking a mess and I might have to do everything again. I’ve tried to buy all the big boys but ffp won’t allow me😂.
I prefer KDB for now just because of Haaland. You know if he doesn’t score Haaland will make one of his passes count and I’m not convinced Salah is back just yet. 🤔
Is Nunez a great option? I think I missed your analysis on him. Would like to know what you think.
I actually think this is one of the things that I like about him. Saka and Martinelli have taken the spotlight at Arsenal despite Odegaard having the 2nd highest xG (behind Gabriel Jesus) and by far the highest xA in the 5 games prior to the World Cup break. These are the stats:
When you look at the last 5, there's only one player here that people should be choosing.
I like Almiron too and I'm £0.1m short of being able to pick him instead of Pereira - easily found be downgrading Raya to a £4.5m or Danny Ward.
Ha ha - You don't want to disobey FFP - you'll have a transfer embargo and will only be able to sign free transfers.
Me neither. It's something I'm still thinking about 🤔
I think that he is despite his terrible finishing. I briefly covered him in my core players post and he's somebody is almost 100% in my GW17 team.
That’s some great stats for Odegard and he’s way cheaper. I think I’ll go for him.
I have been able to add Almiron to my seen and I’ve found the funds for Odegard so I’ve moved from Perreira.
There’s doubt over Mitrovic and I’m not sure if he’s worth having him in the team.
Thanks for adding the link to Nunez. I’ll look at that to help my selection.
It's interesting but I'll caveat that by saying that Martinelli and Saka's stats were much better than Odegaard last season
So that'll confuse things 🤣
The only thing to remember is that one of your Midfielders or Forwards will need to get benched every week and I'd try to avoid having too much money sat on the bench.
The way Marco Silva was talking, I'm expecting Mitrovic to miss out this weekend. He said something like "he's a doubt, we're hopeful for GW17. If not, hopefully he'll be back for GW18". If he's only "hopeful" for GW18, I can't see him playing this match. Then there's the 4 Yellow Cards situation and Mitrovic isn't the kind of player to hold back through the risk of a one match ban.
Well thank you for getting me more confused 😂. A really big thanks.😅
For now my midfield is made of Almiron, Rashford, De Brunye, Kulusevski and Odegard ish. If they have good fixtures I might not need to bench any of them.
That’s just more questions for Mitrovic. I wouldn’t be very worried if there were no doubts over Toney but it is what it is. 🤔
Your analysis is from Harvard 🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿
As it is going ,I am most likely to have a similar squad to yours.
Odegaard and Almiron are similar players who had a wonderful season before the break, there won’t be much difference picking either. For me, I will choose Almiron because he his Newcastle main player at the moment compared to Odegaard.
I do know much About Andreas Pereira
De Bruyne Or Salah? Another difficult option 🤔 Liverpool will want to bounce back after a poor start of the season while Man city will want to close the gap with arsenal. I will be making my decision from their stats before the break so I will choosing De Bruyne.
Ha ha, thanks 😁
Newcastle probably have the better fixtures to start with so you could always make the switch later if Almiron can't maintain his hot streak or if Arsenal have another Double Gameweek announced (it's possible their game v. Everton will be moved to GW21).
I only know a little😅 I know he takes a lot of Set Pieces and if Mitrovic gets booked again (and is therefore suspended), Pereira will be on penalty duty. He also bleaches his hair and has some tattoos 🙂
I'm starting Salah but keeping a Man City slot open to move to De Bruyne in GW20 at the latest. If Salah starts well though, I'll struggle to go through with it!
Hmmm
Can’t wait for you to complete your team selection.
I finished it yesterday - https://hive.blog/hive-101690/@blockchainfpl/fpl-squad-building-for-gameweek-17-defenders
Although I've made 1 change since then as I expect Brighton to have a Double Gameweek 21.
I will check it out as soon as I am less busy. Thanks for the update
