When History Repeats Itself: Ireland’s World Cup Dreams and a Story from 1997
In the world of sports, sometimes fate is not in your favor. This is what the Irish cricket team experienced when their match against Bangladesh was called off due to rain, and their World Cup dreams were left hanging in the balance.
This unfortunate situation reminds me of a story from 1997 when Ireland faced Bangladesh in an ICC Trophy match. If Bangladesh won, they would advance to the semifinals of the tournament. Ireland managed to score 129 runs against Bangladesh, but the rain started pouring down after 6 overs when Bangladesh was at 24. After the rain delay, Bangladesh’s target was set at 66 runs in 20 overs.
Ireland’s players saw an opportunity for an upset and claimed that the pitch was unsuitable for play. They hoped for the game to be called off. However, the Bangladesh coach, the legendary cricketing figure Gordon Greenidge, took matters into his own hands and helped the ground staff with the towels. He wanted to ensure that the game could be played and that the outcome would be determined on the field, not off it.
The match was scheduled to resume, but it was eventually called off due to a wet outfield. Greenidge told the match referee, "Sir, this is not good for the game." Greenidge’s actions were a testament to his sportsmanship and his respect for the spirit of the game.
Nature can be cruel, and time waits for no one. In the world of sports, things can change in an instant. The Irish cricket team can only hope that their World Cup dreams are not dashed, and they can earn a spot in the tournament through the selection round. As for Bangladesh, they have already qualified through the automatic selection process.
Note: Ireland had to win the ODI series against Bangladesh 3:0 to automatically qualify for the World Cup that will take place in India later this year. Now, South Africa has qualified and Ireland will have to go through the playoffs for a birth in the World Cup.

Thanks for the info. Do you know how often India has played against Pakistan and which team won most of the games?
Total 203 matches including tests, ODIs and T20s. India has won 72 times whereas Pakistan has won 88 matches. But India has won all matches in World Cup.
Wow, thanks for info :)
