Yordan Álvarez en números || Yordan Álvarez in numbers [ESP + ENG]
Yordan Álvarez is one of the most dangerous hitters in baseball today. The 24-year-old Cuban is playing his fourth MLB season with the Houston Astros and since his first appearance in the big top he has been a key player for the Astros. After being traded by the Los Angeles Dodgers and sent to the Astros, the Rookie of The Year of the 2019 season accumulates impressive numbers for a ballplayer of his age despite being almost a year out due to injury. Let's take a look at the stats of this great hitter in his short-lived career.
Temporada de Novato || Rookie Season
Yordan was called up to the Major Leagues in 2019 after scrapping for minor league ball. The 1.96-meter giant saw action in 87 challenges that season. Accumulating a .313 batting average thanks to 98 unhittable hits including 26 doubles and 27 round-trippers. He drove in 78 runners, scored on 58 occasions and received 52 tickets. His OBP was an astronomical .412, his slugging .665 and his OPS was 1.067. These numbers earned him Rookie of the Year in a spectacular season, where he was also awarded Rookie of the Month for three consecutive months. That year he was in his first World Series where the Astros lost to the surprising Washington Nationals. He hit a home run and towed three runners with a total of 14 hits and a .241 average throughout the postseason.
##Lesión y temporada consagratoria || Injury and a breakthrough season
The year 2020 was not at all positive for the Cuban. The season was reduced by the pandemic and the native of Las Tunas could only appear in two games, where he hit a home run and towed 4 teammates. The absence was due to the fact that he contracted Covid-19 and several problems with his knee that forced him to undergo surgery. The following year, 2021, he was able to play more than 140 games and showed what he is capable of doing in a full season. In 144 games he booted 33 balls and drove in 104 runs, not bad for a year full of setbacks. He stepped on home plate 92 times, fired 149 hits with 35 doubles, and his first and only triple of his life in the regular season so far. He negotiated 50 bases on balls that gave him an OBP of .346, although he struck out 145 times, a figure too high, and his average was .277, showing a decrease in his contact. His slugging and OPS were down from 2019 at .531 and .877 respectively. The Astros reached the World Series for the second time in three years so Yordan participated in his second postseason. In it, he won the MVP of the American League Championship Series. Those play offs have been by far the best for Yordan, who accumulated an average of .315, with 17 hits, including 4 doubles, 2 triples and a pair of runs batted in, he drove in 9 runs and received 13 bases on balls.
Temporada actual || Current season
This year has started at full speed for the Cuban, who is fourth in home runs with 8 and has an OPS of 1.014, which places him in the eleventh position. In the last week he has connected half of all his home runs. In total, in 2022 he has participated in 19 games, where he has scored 15 times, hit 18 homers and towed 14. He has been a punishment for the right-handed pitchers to whom he has hit 7 home runs, 12 hits and has driven in 11 runners, although these pitchers are the ones who have struck him out the most with 7 of the 13 he has struck out. His favorite team in this beginning of the season has been the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to whom he has hit 3 balls, driven in 6 and has negotiated 4 tickets. Five of his 8 home runs have been with clean bases, with the highest strikeout count being 1-1. If he continues with this home run pace he is projected for a 54 home run season. In short, Yordan Alvarez has a long road ahead in the MLB, which seems to be destined for great feats in this beautiful sport.
