Hello Hivers!
Anke here aka Anna-NewKey.

Jump to the German version

Yesterday afternoon it was time to say Goodbye to Hamburg once more. In the old days someone would drive me to the airport because in those days there was no other convenient way to get there. A car journey would take roughly 45minutes, but taking public transport could be a nightmare.

Nowadays there is a train line that goes straight to the airport and even announces the stops in English, so for some years I've been starting my journey on a bus right in front of my family's house. My nephew got me one of those new prepaid cards, as you can't use cash anymore, credit cards are pretty useless in Hamburg anyhow, most places don't allow them. These prepaid cards are THAT new that even the bus driver didn't know how I was supposed to use it.. 🙄😄
My brand new card got debited but I got no ticket, which felt a little strange.

At Berliner Tor I changed into to the S-Bahn S1, that takes me straight to the airport. "S" stands for "Strom" and means "electric power". The S-Bahn is part of the Deutsche Bahn, hence the DB on the front.

A few stops further and I reached my next stop on my way back to Britain.
There was a very drunken Brit annoying everyone; a couple of people, including me alerted the staff as we felt he shouldn't be allowed to board the plane. The Bundespolizei was called and that was the end of his trip for the time being.

The plane was pretty full, but for some bizarre reason was a lucky enough to have three seats to myself. I wondered if that was because of the missing drunken sailor.

Auf Wiedersehen, Deutschland! Hello Britain!

One more hurdle, which wasn't too bad I'm glad to say, and I was back.

That's it for today; Thanks for looking!

Welcome back. Looks like you had a nice trip. I expect the local transport has changed since I was in Hamburg as that was 14 years ago! My friend @stav who you met at my Hitchin meetup went on that trip with me and some other guys.

See you again soon.

Yes, some of the lines have indeed changed and I have to make sure that I'm not taking them for granted and going somewhere I didn't intend to.
Still a pretty good system, and everything is all neat and clean. I also understand that it's got cheaper, but I can't remember the price. But no reason for anybody to go by car.

I had no idea where the name S-bahn came from, thanks for the interesting tip. I am impressed in contrast to Hamburg how much I have been asked to pay with cash, maybe not in public transport, but in many food places they don't even accept cards, isn't it a bit old-fashioned?

Glad you made it home safely, and that you didn't have to check to see if the drunk was your row mate hahaha better to stay in the dark. A digital hug!

I have been asked to pay with cash

Crazy, isn't it? It used to be a data factor, too much data collection in the German's mind, then it might be cost too, credit cards are expensive for the shops; but you can pay by local debit cards, but that's no good for us foreigners!
Do you remember our boat guy talking about tourism? They sure have to change that silly cash-only thing! I never have cash on me.. lol

Hugging you back!!! Have a lovely week! xx
