The star that didn't want to shine?
Where does Neymar come from?
Neymar was born in Mogi das Cruzes, São Paulo, Brazil. He is the son of Neymar Santos Sr. and Nadine Santos. His father was also a soccer player and became an adviser to his son. "He has spoken several times about him: 'My father has been by my side since I was little. He takes care of things, my finances and my family."
Growing up, Neymar developed his love of soccer through futsal and street soccer, with the Brazilian stating more than once that futsal helped him develop his technique and dribbling skills in small spaces.
In 2003 he moved with his family to São Vicente, where he started playing for the youth divisions of Portuguesa Santista. Then, in 2003, he moved to Santos, where he signed for Santos FC. With the money earned from his success in the youth categories, he and his family bought a house next to Vila Belmiro, the club's stadium. His family's quality of life improved, since at the age of 15, he was earning 10,000 reais per month and at 16, 125,000.
We must remember that Neymar is a Brazilian soccer player who emerged from the youth categories of Santos, where he made his professional debut at the age of 17 and comes from a soccer school and soccer references where if you see the opportunity to dribble and create an entertaining but competitive game he will not hesitate to show his skills and good game control.
Magical debut with Barcelona
I can't forget the message that FC Barcelona gave us where they announced that they had reached an agreement in principle with Santos and Neymar for the incorporation of the player for the next five seasons. With this message via Twitter, at 3:15 a.m. Spanish time on May 26, 2013, Barcelona announced the signing of the Brazilian striker until 2018.
Neymar's debut was nothing more and nothing less than on the first day of La Liga 2013/14, he made his debut in an official match against Levante UD. On August 21 he played against Atletico Madrid where he did an exceptional job where he scored his first official goal, made his debut in the UEFA Champions League on September 18, in which Barça defeated AFC Ajax 4-0 and to further demonstrate that this guy is a goal machine and is a player capable of giving you an entertaining game and with "elite" category on December 11, scored his first three goals of the Champions League, and scored a hat-trick in the 6-1 victory over Celtic in Barcelona.
Neymar was quickly described as "a real phenomenon" as he was a player who primarily played in the positions of center forward, second striker, winger and, to a lesser extent, attacking midfielder. Noted by all for his ability to score and his creative skills. He usually plays as the left striker in the 4-3-3 formation, both in his club and country, due to his remarkable acceleration and creative skills; this position allows him to shoot with his deft foot and assist his teammates. Within his skills stand out his creativity, vision, passing, definition, dribbling, feinting, touch, and technique, being referred to as an "electric" and "explosive" player.
Neymar was part of the "Holy Trinity" (Neymar, Luis Suárez and Lionel Messi), three players who combined at an unprecedented level in every game and even in training, making majestic plays where they demonstrated a soccer quality and an elite level that made you get excited every time one of them had the ball because you knew they were going to make a play that would take your breath away.
Neymar and his "decline"
Barca's Neymar was a player of another level (how I miss this Neymar), a player who competed seriously and was focused on all aspects; he was focused on a good game on the pitch without losing his essence as a player, he was focused on his business life as a public figure and above all he was focused on physical and mental health. Simply a soccer beast.
Neymar's highest level without a doubt was in the 15/16 season when Messi was sidelined for approximately 2 months due to a torn ligament (September 26, 2015), at this time Neymar took on the role of leader and playmaker, here we saw a focused, imposing Neymar, with an excellent ability to adapt to difficult plays but without losing the focus of being able to play as a team, we also saw a player with a vision of play and with deep passes that are not well remembered because they did not end in goal but that did not stop being incredible and majestic.
A striking change is when Neymar shaved his hair and it felt strange to see him without a weird hairstyle or colored dyes, but this showed that he was 100% focused on the field and performing dribbles and risky moves in the elite of soccer with unparalleled precision.
"The star that didn't want to shine"
Neymar had it all; He had goals, he was a team player, he meshed with the team with a perfection, an incredible speed to overflow combined with his cheek and agility, in my opinion this kind of player with the ability to dribble and the courage to execute it with a level of effectiveness is being lost in soccer as managers are no longer looking for this as much and all this has a fundamental reason.
Having a player with these attributes but with "little merit" in the team makes them lose focus, as it happened to Neymar, in the end he ended up with a bad physical condition due to so much partying and alcohol, this coupled with the comments in the world that he was under the "shadow" of Messi, We have to remember that many times Neymar was throwing the team on his shoulder making impressive plays or making incredible assists that ended in goals but the spotlight in many opportunities was taken by Messi which generated a palpable discomfort to Neymar apart that he was a little burned by the high intensity training of Luis Enrique.
I don't think Neymar left Barca because of "being Messi's shadow" but we must admit that this weighed on him and that (in my opinion) he was only looking for more comfort and although Neymar will never lose the quality and expertise on the field I think he lost something more important; he lost his desire to compete with the best at the highest level which is the worst thing that can happen to a footballer.
