Exploring Neve Tzedek - 15k activity - My Actifit Report Card: April 25 2023

Hello and welcome to today's #actifit activity report¹

Today is a special day in Israel. The day begins as a "Yom HaZikaron" - "Remembrance Day" and ends in the evening as "Yom Ha'atzmaut" - "Independence Day".

Remembrance Day

Yom HaZikaron is the national remembrance day observed in Israel for all Israeli military personnel who lost their lives in the struggle that led to the establishment of the State of Israel and for those who have been killed subsequently while on active duty in Israel's armed forces. As of Yom HaZikaron 2022, that number was 24,213.
The day opens with a siren the preceding evening at 20:00. The siren is heard all over the country and lasts for one minute, during which Israelis stop everything, including driving on highways, and stand in silence, commemorating the fallen and showing respect.
A two-minute siren is sounded at 11:00 the following morning, which marks the opening of the official memorial ceremonies and private remembrance gatherings at each cemetery where soldiers are buried.²

Independence Day

Memorial Day, or Yom Hazikaron, ends at sunset, and is immediately followed by the onset of Independence Day.
Many cities hold outdoor performances in cities' squares featuring leading Israeli singers and fireworks displays. Streets around the squares are closed to cars, allowing people to sing and dance in the streets.
Israeli families traditionally celebrate with picnics and barbecues. Balconies are decorated with Israeli flags, and small flags are attached to car windows. Israeli Television channels air the official events live, and classic cult Israeli movies and skits are shown.³

In the evening big cities including my city of Holon celebrated with a beautiful firework display.

Today I had some spare time and decided to walk and explore Neve Tzedek, southwestern neighborhood of Tel Aviv. It is one of the oldest neighborhoods full of heritage sites. It was gentrified and became fashionable and popular.

I was interested in exploring the streetart culture in the area surrounding the old railway. The railway was converted into a beautiful, long park with dedicated cycling path, walking paths, playgrounds, outdoor public gyms and lots of streetart.

I was so impressed with my cycling visits that I decided to explore further on foot.

This is the view from one of the bridges onto the old railway tracks that were converted into park. The park is called "Park Hamesila" - "Railway park"

I found this photo of the old railway displayed on the bridge.

Here are the photos side by side of modern and historical view of the area.

On my way I explored back streets and alleys near the railway park. I took some photos of interesting buildings in the area.
