My Actifitivity: September 26 2022
Monday.
More gloomy weather and a healthy amount of rain. Shroomish conditions.
Just a few days ago @madame-cyntaia stumbled across something that looked a lot like a lion's mane mushroom in one of her recent ozark-life reports. An impressive white pom-pom. To my knowledge there's not too many look-alikes, but I'm not exactly an expert myself.
Finding lion's mane in the wild is rather rare and it's a real mushroom treasure. A delicacy with excellent health benefits.
Much to my surprise, I suddenly stumbled across something somewhat similar myself.
This fungus clearly doesn't have the impressive size that would make it look like a proper white pom-pom, but wishful thinking quickly tends to get in the way when looking for a specific kind of mushroom.
The colour is way off into the brownish beige and the texture is much more "hairy" than the "stringy" appearance one would look for in a proper hericium erinaceus. I already knew the similarities didn't match at all and wishful thinking was really all I had found here.
Just to be sure, we're going to inspect it a little further.
Let's break off a small chunk to see how it grows.
Yeah! Nah!
That's not lion's mane at all. The body of this shroom was poreous and layered. Spongy describes it quite well. A pom-pom blanc would have a clean and solid meat to it with a stringy texture.
This is most likely just some hairy slime mold that has grown into an unusually bulbous structure. Definitely not the mushroom jackpot my mind was wishing for.
Anyways, onwards to why I actually came out here this Monday.
I had noticed this cyclops-groot looking tree not too long ago, I didn't carry any #googlyeyes that day but my #pareidolia immediately found a new friend right here.
I made a promise to @bucipuci to give him an eye soonTM. So here's that promise fulfilled.
I also recall @erikah saying she finds #googlyeyes are "fake and staged", I hope I was already able to persuade her otherwise... but maybe this can be the final proof right here?!
And last but not least, @mimismartypants found a single left over googly eye, maybe this can be a small inspiration, too.
Thanks for your time!

The implantation was really successful. This is exactly what I saw the first time. I was just waiting for him to open his eyes :-D

The concluding part your identification of the white pom-pom-like mushroom is what I like about science.
Keep digging deep on what the shrooms should be called and take all the glory.

Epic googly eye Cyclops! He looks mean and scary! Would not want to meet him on a walk. When I get back from this wedding weekend it's on! Yay for #actigooglies #googlyfit
#googlyfit ... hahaha, excellent!
Thank you for the analytical breakdown of your shroom there. Very helpful!
I'm hopefully heading back to our part of the woods to check on the (hopefully) Lion's Mane today; I'll take some update pics, though I don't think I'll be breaking into it quite yet. If it is a Lion's Mane, I'll be researching how to dry and store it. I take it everyday for nerve issues-- it's expensive!!
LOVE the cyclops dude. He even has eyelashes! Yay for #googlyeyes! It's magical inspiration to see the world through younger, more whimsical eyes. We all need that, I think. Thank you for providing it!
yessss! that's the #googlyeyes spirit =D
