Desde la creación de este blog a principios de año hemos hablado de Fórmula 1 puramente. Sin embargo, en esta publicación hablaré de un lado más personal y un poco alejado de las pistas de carreras. Y no, el hecho de que Bélgica sea mi selección favorita en este mundial no tiene que ver con el hecho de existir allí el Circuito de Spa-Francorchamps, una mítica pista de la Fórmula 1 la cual es la favorita de muchos pilotos y fanáticos. La razón por la cual me he fijado en Bélgica en este mundial (y no solo en este mundial, sino en los dos anteriores: 2018 y 2014), responde a algo no solamente racional o técnico, sino también a algo un poco emocional y relacionado a mi propia personalidad y ser.

Cualquiera que sepa un poco de fútbol puede darse cuenta que la selección de Bélgica tiene grandes jugadores y talento excepcional. Los antecedentes hablan por sí mismos. En el mundial de 2018 no estuvieron lejos de ganarle a Francia en semi-finales. Sólo los detuvo la gran defensa gala. En la Eurocopa de 2021 sucedió algo similar.

Pero, más allá de las estrellas como Lukaku, Hazard, De Bryune, entre otros, las razones por las que Bélgica es mi selección favorita van más allá del nivel de sus jugadores. Es cierto, ya desde 2014 me había dado cuenta del tremendo potencial que había, pero para aquel entonces era un plantel muy joven y ya para 2018 llegaron en su mejor forma.

Aún recuerdo que, previo al mundial de Sudáfrica de 2010, mi selección favorita era Holanda. La reacción de las demás personas al comentar esto era de extrañeza, me veían raro, como si yo estuviera rompiendo alguna "regla social" por no tener una selección favorita que no sea España, Brasil, Alemania, Portugal, Francia, Italia, etc.

Y mis razones eran válidas, Holanda tenía un muy buen plantel de jugadores, y lograron llegar a la final. Reconozco que España tenía el mejor equipo en ese momento, era la mejor selección del mundo con el mejor juego en aquel entonces. Pero, Holanda estuvo muy cerca de ganar ese mundial, más allá de que su juego no era el más vistoso o el mejor, estuvieron muy cerca de meter el gol a Casillas en varias ocasiones.

Creo que ya más o menos he explicado porqué mi selección favorita es Bélgica actualmente. No es tanto que tenga muy buenos jugadores, sino porque la mayoría no le presta atención, pero este mundial es una oportunidad para dejar de asumir ese papel secundario. Aún recuerdo como muchas personas, incluso comentaristas deportivos, menospreciaban a Bélgica en el mundial de 2018. También recuerdo que en 2010 muchos comentaristas deportivos le otorgaban a Holanda un papel secundario.

Por alguna razón, más allá de lo deportivo, me siento identificado con esas selecciones que muchos miran por debajo del hombro solamente porque no son "las de siempre" o no tienen una figura carismática o popular como Messi, Cristiano, Mbappe, Neymar, etc. A veces siento que la mayoría sigue a las selecciones más populares más por moda o por inercia que por un motivo particular o personal.

Y sí, pues por tercer mundial consecutivo Bélgica es mi selección favorita. Bueno, debo reconocer que en 2014 seguía siendo Holanda, pero ya a Bélgica le había puesto el ojo desde entonces. De alguna manera, esto es parte de la fiesta que se vive en cada mundial y la pasión que siempre despierta el fútbol, incluso en los que prácticamente sólo lo ven cada 4 años, no solo en lo deportivo sino en un reflejo de nosotros mismos y en nuestro ser.

Debo reconocer también que en este mundial Bélgica quizás no ha llegado en tan buena forma como en 2018. Muchos de sus jugadores están en edades un poco altas y no parecen haber muchas innovaciones respecto a figuras jóvenes y estilo de juego. Su mayor debilidad es la defensa. Han perdido algunos amistosos previos al mundial con equipos en teoría inferiores. Pero esto no quita que siguen siendo grandes candidatos.

Otro aspecto a comentar: el uniforme que ha llevado Bélgica a este mundial no me gusta del todo, especialmente la camiseta principal. La secundaria de color blanco me ha parecido genial, pero no tanto la roja. Si algo puedo hablar de la Fórmula 1 es que cuando un equipo presenta un auto no tan atractivo visualmente es porque quizás no traen un auto tan competitivo. Espero que esto no se un indicativo, pero también debo decir que muchas de las camisetas este mundial no son tan vistosas visualmente.

Mis otras selecciones favoritas en este mundial son Holanda, Croacia, Uruguay, Japón e Inglaterra. Debo reconocer también que no sé exactamente qué nivel tienen actualmente estas selecciones, sólo las he puesto como favoritas por el mismo motivo que Bélgica: "están allí", aunque siento que habrán sorpresas mucho más inesperadas en este mundial, tal como ya hemos visto. En cuanto a nivel de juego, por supuesto habrán motivos deportivos y técnicos para decir que algunas otras selecciones pintan como las mejores actualmente (Francia, por ejemplo).

Anyone who knows a little bit about football can realize that the Belgium national team has great players and exceptional talent. The track record speaks for itself. In the 2018 World Cup they were not far from beating France in the semi-finals. They were only stopped by the great French defense. At Euro 2021 something similar happened.

But beyond the stars like Lukaku, Hazard, De Bryune, among others, the reasons why Belgium is my favorite team go beyond the level of its players. It's true, I had already realized since 2014 the tremendous potential there, but by then it was a very young squad and already by 2018 they arrived in their best form.

I still remember that, prior to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, my favorite team was the Netherlands. The reaction of other people when I commented this was strange, they looked at me weird, as if I was breaking some "social rule" for not having a favorite team other than Spain, Brazil, Germany, Portugal, France, Italy, etc.

And my reasons were valid, Holland had a very good squad of players, and they made it to the final. I recognize that Spain had the best team at that time, it was the best team in the world with the best game at that time. But the Netherlands came very close to winning that World Cup, even though their game was not the best or the most colorful, they came very close to scoring against Casillas on several occasions.

I think I've more or less explained why my favorite team is Belgium at the moment. It's not so much that they have very good players, but because most people don't pay attention to them, but this world cup is an opportunity to stop taking that secondary role. I still remember how many people, even sports commentators, belittled Belgium in the 2018 world cup. I also remember how in 2010 many sports commentators were giving the Netherlands a secondary role.

For some reason, beyond the sporting, I feel identified with those teams that many look down on only because they are not "the usual" or don't have a charismatic or popular figure like Messi, Cristiano, Mbappe, Neymar, etc. Sometimes I feel that most people follow the most popular teams more out of fashion or inertia than for any particular or personal reason.

And yes, for the third consecutive World Cup Belgium is my favorite team. Well, I must admit that in 2014 it was still Holland, but I had my eye on Belgium since then. Somehow, this is part of the party that is lived in every World Cup and the passion that soccer always awakens, even in those who practically only see it every 4 years, not only in sports but in a reflection of ourselves and in our being.

I must also recognize that in this World Cup Belgium has perhaps not arrived in as good a shape as in 2018. Many of their players are at a bit high ages and there don't seem to be many innovations regarding young figures and style of play. Their biggest weakness is their defense. They have lost some pre-World Cup friendlies to theoretically inferior teams. But this does not detract from the fact that they are still great candidates.

Another aspect to comment on: the uniform worn by Belgium in this World Cup I don't like at all, especially the main jersey. I think the white secondary jersey is great, but not so much the red one. If there is one thing I can say about Formula 1, it is that when a team presents a car that is not so visually appealing, it is perhaps because they are not bringing such a competitive car. I hope this is not indicative, but I must also say that many of the jerseys this World Cup are not that visually appealing.

My other favorite teams in this World Cup are Holland, Croatia, Uruguay, Japan and England. I must also admit that I don't know exactly what level these teams are currently at, I have only put them as favorites for the same reason as Belgium: "they are there", although I feel that there will be much more unexpected surprises in this world cup, as we have already seen. In terms of level of play, there will of course be sporting and technical reasons to say that some other teams look the best at the moment (France, for example).
